For my Big Birthday--75!!--I'm asking for one big present: a gift to a fabulous adult literacy project in the Democratic Republic of Congo that I've been involved with since its beginnings exactly 3 years ago. In fact, I celebrated my 72nd birthday in Africa when three Congolese women and I were planning the whole thing. Our baby has grown fast! Several hundred teachers are now conducting classes for thousands of adult students--many of them women--eager to catch up with the rest of the world by learning to read and write. Congo is one of the poorest countries in the world with one of the highest rates of illiteracy. More teachers are about to be trained by newly trained facilitators. Teachers have few or no resources of their own but they happily work as volunteers because the demand for their services is HUGE and the results are so rewarding. Training and equipping each teacher with books and classroom materials costs about $300. A big gift of $7500 for my Big Birthday could put 25 new teachers to work where they are most needed. BUT EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS! $10 would be terrific!
