I'm excited to announce I will be running the 124th Boston Marathon on April 20th, 2020 for Team BIDMC! More specifically I will be running in support of the Bowdoin Street Healthy Champions Program.
The Bowdoin Street Healthy Champions Program is an anti-obesity, education, fitness, and community-building initiative serving children in the Bowdoin/Geneva neighborhood of Dorchester.
Growing up, nutrition never weighed on my mind, but neither did my weight. I was a very active child and participated in 2 sports for most of my life. That coupled with the healthy base diet my parents provided me with daily meant that I could indulge when I wanted to while keeping my weight down. That all changed when I got hip surgery at age 16. All of a sudden I was unable to walk long distances, let alone workout. While I thought I had a fairly balanced diet before I got the surgery, I quickly found eating the way I used to caused me to gain quite a bit of weight with my new sedentary lifestyle. While I wanted to change my diet to fit my altered life, I found myself unsure of what a balanced diet looked like for a non-athlete. As I started looking into the variety of information available only confused me even more as to what I should be eating. Luckily enough, I got back into sports and ended up as a rower for Notre Dame. There I was given access to a whole team of nutritionists who educated me on what a balanced diet looked like, and how I could best fuel my body. As I was receiving these lessons in nutrition, I was also enrolled in poverty studies courses. I studied the correlation between poverty, lack of education and poor nutrition, specifically in children and adolescents. Help me combat this problem. The Bowdoin Street Healthy Champions Program provides the children of Dorchester with crucial access to nutrition education and fitness opportunities. I am thrilled to give back to the community by running for the children of Dorchester.
