Why I am running:
Maybe it was because he was not as constant a fixture in my life that made the scarce time with him feel more valuable. But it was always a big deal to me when I learned that Uncle A was coming to town.
Uncle A was a larger than life character to me growing up. He was fun, loved Boston sports, and especially the Bruins. I remember him often holding sway over family gatherings where he would regale us with great stories about his colorful friends, which he would punctuate with his signature “Yahoo!”.
As I moved from childhood to adolescence, Uncle A was someone I looked up to. He went to Harvard, played rugby, rode Harleys, had an interesting job, and devilishly would sneak me a beer or two. Good or bad, I viewed and still view Uncle A as a great guy and someone I love.
Unfortunately, we lost Uncle A to cancer a few years ago. His passing was tragic, and probably even preventable. I will never understand how a father of four, with a Harvard education and financial means chose to forgo routine checkups and cancer screenings.
But it is because of Uncle A that I have chosen to run the 2020 Boston Marathon and to raise funds for the Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Center. Because for every person who has the education and resources that my uncle possessed, there are dozens more who do not; which makes them either unaware or unable to get the care needed to prevent and treat cancer.
By running and raising funds to support the BIDMC Cancer Center, I hope that deaths like my uncle's can be prevented and patients like my uncle can be cured.
All donations are tax deductible. Please email me if you, or your business requires BIDMC's Tax Identification Number and/oran attestation letter. Offline donations are also accepted.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this, that effort alone is appreciated.
