Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues,
I am so grateful to be running the Boston Marathon this year on behalf of BIDMC Cancer Center in honor of my mom, Tara O'Meara.
As many of you know my mom was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in December 2015. She subsequently underwent numerous rounds of radiation, chemotherapy, and ultimately had an esophagectomy in April 2016. Her cancer recurred two more times, and she endured more radiation and chemotherapy until she lost her battle with the disease in December 2017.
Although this is a cancer with an extremely low surivival rate, my mom fought this horrible disease until the end.
Part of her incredible spirit and will to fight was directly related to the amazing team of doctors, nurses, staff, and volunteers at BIDMC. Her team of caregivers never gave up on her for one second and helped her manage this fight.
My journey to the marathon is to not only honor my amazing mom, but also to give back to an organization that truly puts the patient first while simultaneously providing cutting edge treatments.
I would be truly grateful to have your support this year as I take on this endeavor that will be both physically and mentally challenging, but is nothing compared to what cancer patients endure daily.
Yours in gratitude,
Team BIDMC is running to support a variety of programs, including the Cancer Center, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Klarman Family Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Annual Fund, kidney disease research, and Bowdoin Street Health Center's Healthy Champions Program. Several of our runners are also supporting our Needham, Milton, and Plymouth affiliates. Thank you for your support!
At the BIDMC Cancer Center, gifted physicians, outstanding nurses, and dedicated staff form a team that is committed to breakthrough treatments delivered with kindness and respect. Researchers have made several discoveries that have led to greater understanding of cancer mechanisms resulting in improved and innovative cancer care. And because we have always understood the physical and emotional toll of a cancer diagnosis, our specialists take the time to listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and develop unique support systems.
