Aloha BGCBI 'Ohana!
Since Monday (March 23, 2020), BGCBI started providing for our Hawaii Island community, daily hot meals that will go to support children, kupuna, our homeless population, and struggling families that are being affected by the current health and economic crisis we are all facing.
As a result of this crisis many people on Island will lose their source of employment. Churches and volunteer groups that help to bring support to our homeless will not have the ability to hold services, collect donations, and convene to help in their normal fashion. And many of our youth will not have the transportation access to get to the school-based cafeterias that will be offering the out of school meals.
Our daily "Community Meal Support Initiative" will literally transport and bring nutritional aid to our most vulnerable populations on Island during the crisis and help to fill in some of the shortfalls and resource gaps.
Monday, we started by cooking, plating, and transporting 210 hot meals to the people that need us the most.
-Meals will be dropped off by BGCBI to the Salvation Army to help feed their family, elderly, and homeless populations.
-BGCBI will then transport and drop off meals to Hope Services Hawaii, at their three shelters located in East Hawaii and their shelter in Pahoa.
-And working closely with Councilwoman Susan Lee Loy, BGCBI will help to get our individual sealed meals to keiki, kupuna, homeless, and families in need that are situated in the Hawaiian Home communities of Keaukaha and Panaewa.
Our initiative starts in East Hawaii (Hilo and Puna) and shortly expands to help our West Hawaii, Ka'u, and Ocean View communities. Please know that I am in the process of securing a kitchen facility in West Hawaii and will be working hard to get the operation going shortly.
All the meals we provide will be free of charge, and we hope to be able to build the capacity to produce up to 500 meals 7-days a week throughout the duration of this crisis.
Thank you to everyone that is helping to make our new critical needs resource offering a reality for our people and communities in need. If you would like to support this initiative, please send me an email.
We'll keep you posted on our progress.
