Back in March when the pandemic was in its early days, a special team at ROC USA went to work figuring out the best way we could help ROC Members who tested positive for COVID-19. The special team quickly launched the #BetterTogether Fund – a fundraising initiative to raise money to provide site fee (‘lot rent’) assistance to households in ROCs with positive cases.
Over the past eight months, 74 individual donors helped us raise $10,225, culminating with a big GivingTuesday effort that brought in more than 20% of total funds raised. ROC USA and the ROC Association matched each donation up to $10,000, bringing the grand total of money raised to $20,225. So far, $18,800 of these funds have already been issued directly to 24 households in need.
Just as we were crossing the “finish line” on our goal, we received exciting news: an anonymous donor wanted to provide their own match of $2,500.
So today, we are thrilled to announce our second fundraising campaign of the year. Every dollar donated up to $2,500 will be matched by our generous donor.
To everyone who made a gift over the last eight months – THANK YOU. Please help us reach our new $2,500 goal by sharing this campaign with your friends, family, and coworkers. Explain to them what a Resident Owned Community is and why helping ROC Members is important.
Throughout the pandemic, we have heard so many moving stories from Members of Resident Owned Communities. Some stories are inspirational, like the family in Washington and the elderly man in New York who both denied grants they qualified for, insisting we save the money for a family who needed it more.
Some stories are incredibly sad, like the woman in Maine who is learning to navigate life as a widow after her husband was one of the first victims of the virus in April, or the senior citizen in New Hampshire who contracted the virus while working part time at a grocery store and passed it on to his wife, who spent weeks in the hospital on a ventilator.
Others are stories of recovery and hope: A new mom in Minnesota who is getting back on her feet after recovering from the coronavirus. A community of front-line workers in Texas getting back to work. A family in Washington that is looking forward to catching up on bills and getting back to normal after they had to quarantine for 24 days as the virus circulated through the entire family.
We look forward to continuing efforts to raise money for families who need it. Consider making a gift today.
