Slow Food Wallowas invites you to donate to The Beth Gibans Memorial Grant Program to support local food-related projects by small-scale food growers and community innovators.
Growing, raising and crafting local food is no small feat. In addition to the immense labor involved, the costs of land, tools and materials continue to grow. In the past five years, our chapter has funded a low tunnel system to extend the growing season; a new tiller to improve gardening efficiency, a special hood for propagating commercial mushrooms and equipment for a bakery with a focus on utilizing heritage grains.
For more than two decades Beth Gibans has provided Wallowa County with delicious produce through her business Backyard Gardens. She freely shared her knowledge and passion for good, healthy food and farming practices with generations of farmers and eaters alike. Beth believed that local food production is import to our health, well-being and our community. Beth founded the Wallowa County Farmers Market, served as a Board Member for many years and has support the market as a vendor, advisor, and friend for 20 years.
Beth, lost her seven-year battle with cancer in June 2021 and we can think of no better way to honor the gifts Beth has given us all than by ensuring that her legacy lives on by supporting farm and food producers.
Slow Food Wallowas will award two grants annually: one will underwrite the cost of a booth at the Wallowa County Farmers Market and the second will provide funding to a local producer in need of financial assistance to expand or maintain their operations.
Please join us with a donation of any amount today.
