WE ARE IN NEED OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO REPAIR EMBANKMENTS (or 'berms') FOR PONDS THAT ARE CRUCIAL TO MARGARET'S ISLAND - LifeTides Institute's Outdoor Learning Environment for Education.
The LifeTides Institute relies on a small 10-acre Island to serve as an outdoor learning center for youth in Jasper County and the Lowcountry of South Carolina . Margaret's Island is a unqiue place- within its 10 acre boundaries are encompassed five different habitats where kids can learn about nature and its connections to life in general. Among these distinctive habitats are 1) a freshwater pond, 2) a salt water pond that exchanges with the tides daily, 3) a tidal creek that flows past the island, 4) an upland coastal maritme forest --all surrounded by 5) marsh lands and wetlands. In particular the ponds are bound by berms that separate them from the marsh and the rest of the marine and coastal environment.
But over the past few years harsh storms, hurricanes, and extreme high tides have breached the pond berms We are in desperate need to repair the pond berms before they are completely eroded away and lost - and we do not have much time. Earlier in 2020, the LifeTides Board of Directors was able to secure a Nationwide Permit from the US Army Corps of Engineers to repair the pond berms by bringing in fill to repair the breaches and reform the berms to better withstand storms and extreme tides. The freshwater pond has been breached to the extent that salt water enters the area and chokes off freshwater aquatic life and the wildlife that relies on it. LifeTides Institute staff and volunteers will undertake much of the preparation work . We have professionals willing to assist us based on years of experience in the region in building and repairing berms and ponds, but the physical works required to bring in fill and repair the area in an environmentally acceptable manner is time consuming.
A modest contribution would make a world of difference for us, and because The LifeTides Institute is a public charity, recognized by the IRS and the State of South Carolina, all contributions are tax-deductible. Thank you for your support!
