Our nonprofit, Hermandad, Inc, began upon my retirement from my counseling practice on July 31, 2019. After Hurricane Maria, my wife and I had started taking extra suitcases on our trips to Puerto Rico carrying needed items for a community assistance agency south of San Juan. The Corporación Milagros del Amor (CorMA) a community agency in Caguas, Puerto Rico has been serving the people there for over 20 years. We brainstormed with them as to their future needs. Their most immediate need was a passenger van to transport clients to medical appointments and distribute food and supplies to area recipients. We searched all summer before we located and secured a used passenger van donated from one of the Oglethorpe Inc. hospitals in Florida. They donated the van to (CorMA). Hermandad paid for the shipping of the van from Florida to Puerto Rico, Our first endeavor was realized. As 2019 came to a close, Hermandad developed plans for our future work in support of the under-served populations in Puerto Rico. We planned a benefit concert featuring the “Clipper Mill String Quarter” on April 29, 2020. The quartet is comprised of four members of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Then came the Covid-19 world pandemic. Our benefit concert had to be postponed, but the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, the coronavirus, and regular earthquakes predicted to continue in Puerto Rico at least until year’s end left the island with many needs. Hermandad learned what was needed and what was hard to find in Puerto Rico.We began sending supplies to be included in hygiene kits for the homeless population earlier this year. Fortunately, our area has many world-class musicians. Although social distancing hindered group concerts, Pianist, Lura Johnson, was available for an online concert. Ms. Johnson serves as a Regular Guest Pianist at Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Principal Keyboardist at Delaware Symphony Orchestra, and Adjunct Faculty and Coordinator of Chamber Music at Peabody Institute, Conservatory and Preparatory School. Her program will be streaming live on Hermandad’s Facebook page, this Saturday, July 11th, from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight time in the United States. It’s a varied program and Lura Johnson will provide commentary regarding her selections.
