In 2013, at the age of 5, Bella was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. To say that we were scared of the future is an understatement. But thanks to the support and guidance from the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi, our family has left that fear behind and lives as normal a life as possible.
Many people are not aware that the DFM is the ONLY organization in Mississippi that provides direct support for families of children with diabetes and assistance to those unable to obtain their LIFE SAVING INSULIN.
Last year, Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi provided:
-Sweet Subject Educational programs for schools across the state, along with 275+ boxes of supplies for school diabetes emergencies.
-Personal hospital visits to newly diagnosed children and their parents, along with backpacks of supplies and age appropriate information to help them through the first days of their "new normal."
-Two sessions of Camp Kandu, a weekend camp for children with diabetes and thier families. Children receive support and form friendships with others just like them, while parents receive education and support from experts and diabetes educators. Camp Kandu is often described as "LIFE CHANGING."
And perhaps, most importantly,
-Patient Assistance was provided to approximately 300 uninsured/underinsured individuals who cannot afford the insulin they require to live. Without insulin, a person with t1 diabetes will only live a few painful days and die a horribly excrutiating death, the DFM's Patient Assistance Program is literally LIFE SAVING.
