Seasoned Settlers mission is to reduce injuries and save lives by empowering our community to make positive life-changing decisions. We accomplish this mission by promoting inclusive lifelong safety, health, and wellness initiatives through a variety of community and professional programming. Seasoned Settlers’ target demographic are individuals and seniors, both gentle populations often underserved and overlooked. An individual is a person who has either an intellectual or developmental disability. Before the pandemic with community support, fundraising, and out of pocket donations, Seasoned Settlers hosted large events, ranging nearly 300 families, for both individuals and seniors to attend as recreational community outings.
In the past, we’ve invested our time creating social gatherings for our loved ones that included karaoke, picnics, dance parties, arts and crafts, live theatrical performances, and much more. Feel free to visit the Seasoned Settlers YouTube channel to familiarize yourself deeper.
The main facilities sites we serve are Adult Day Programs and senior centers. Adult Daycare Program is “supportive services designed to meet the needs of adults with disabilities who have difficulty performing activities of daily living. These programs provide adults physical and emotional well-being through healthcare services, social and recreational activities.”
Due to the pandemic, both Day programs and Senior Centers have canceled recreation programs.
Seasoned Settlers will proactively combat social isolation through health and wellness. Our goal is to provide a mentally stimulating outdoor recreational experience to engage in social activity while continuing to adhere to the safety guidelines.
Why do you feel the $25,000 would address the unmet need?
Once the pandemic caused a global upset, the outings our individuals knew were instantaneously halted and placed on an indefinite suspension. What are our friends in the community to do now with their only means of recreation removed? What are our seniors who are also suffering due to pandemic guidelines and social and distancing to do now? No longer able to attend their local recreation services, see their families, or leave their homes? Through the social engagement of this new program, “Beez Bikes”, this guided cyclist activity will connect both individuals and seniors to the community to eradicate social isolation. This $25,000 will address the direct needs of our individuals and seniors, by allowing the purchase of Trio Bikes which costs approximately $14,000. The remaining balance will be forwarded to securing a safe tow hitch and storage facility for safety, as well as other instruments and materials needed to accommodate social distancing activities.
Loneliness impacts a person's health much like a chronic disease. Social isolation has reached epidemic proportions and has a negative impact on emotional and physical health. Loneliness is a social determinant of health, similar to lack of transportation, food insecurity, or poverty.
How much of a lasting impact on this community would the proposal have?
This impact will proactively assist both physical, behavioral, and cognitive mental health for clients and the community. Beez Bikes is a community inclusive recreational activity serving an array of population groups that represent those with a range of disabilities, impairments, and additional conditions. Cycling will be fun, engaging, and offer a safe socially distanced fun event! The duration of the program will create on-going longevity and lasting memories for our community.
Named after Bobbie Colter, nicknamed “Beez”, the grandmother of one of our dear affiliates, who recently passed this year due to health conditions amplified after contracting COVID-19, this program will also be in her honor as she was apart of the gentle community we serve, who enjoyed and inspired many of the outings and activities created and hosted by Seasoned Settlers.
