We are volunteers with CAAAV Organizing Asian Communities who have participated in the NYCHA language justice campaign, organizing tenants in the fight against Major Capital Improvements (MCIs), spreading the word about tenant meetings, the demonstration against Amazon HQ2, and more. We’ve seen how important CAAAV’s work is and the tangible differences it has made in the lives of working class Asian communities. Working-class tenants are especially vulnerable to the impact of COVID-19, as many of them have been let go from their jobs and those who haven’t may not be able to work from home. CAAAV’s work has become even more important to helping them stay in their homes, and making sure their homes continue to be livable.
Elected officials have not taken drastic enough action to protect people against economic and physical devastation, and existing relief programs are insufficient. Social and economic inequalities are widening as a result of the crisis, and your help is more important than ever!
The money raised by this campaign will directly aid CAAAV members by providing:
Direct emergency relief in food, medicine, rent relief, or legal aid
Support for residents to put pressure on NYCHA to cancel rent and for HUD to keep up maintenance and make necessary repairs so that homes continue to be safe
Translation into Chinese, Bangla, and Korean for members to stay informed about the crisis and know their rights
Building power to rent strike collectively
