Chanting! aka Okyo Practice
Specifically, I'm going to be changing. Soaking in and putting into the world vibrations, everyday.
Why daily practice?
(modified from my friend, Chika's page)
There's great beauty and simplicity to committing to a daily practice. The commitment beforehand removes any need to decide whether to do the practice. Plus, I like structure in my day, especially when the practice helps bring me focus, in the face of so much uncertainty.
Why this daily practice?
Sound vibration is really healing for me. I've known this for some time. From practicing meditation and brahmari breath during my yoga teacher training multiple years ago to bija seed sounds chanting to now Okyo.
I recently did a 21 day focused Zen Buddhist practice that ended with 7 days together. I practiced for the first 14 days but never did the chanting portion, aka Okyo. I had a copy of the book but didn't understand the form around the 13 pages. On the morning of day 22, we started on the first page and to my surprise completed the whole book! Throughout the week, I struggled to keep up with the syllables, enjoyed the warmth chanting created, and the energetic shift and clarity it brought to the entire group.
I've chosen to chant Makahannya Haramitta Shingyo, also known as the Heart Sutra. I still have much to learn from this teaching and am glad to be inviting it and literally singing it out everyday.
Also vibration literally has the power to change our bodies. And I strongly believe we aren't going to achieve justice and peace in the world without transformation that is rooted not only in our minds but deeply in our bodies.
Thank you for supporting me in my challenge!
Honestly, I feel tired of fundraising and nervous to reach out to my community about spiritual practice. It kind of feels like coming out of the closet. Yet I believe that justice that is not spirit-full doesn't exist. So please support Buddhist Peace Fellowship to keep their spirit full programs for social justice going and donate whatever you can.
As a thank you, you can score a lovely BPF T-shirt when you donate $30 or more until August 31!
May you feel connected to your source, inner and with in the world.

Movement Friends, our daily routine is due for a boost!
Hi, we're the Block Build Be Blossom team! We come from different backgrounds, but some important things unite us. We embrace the paradox of loving the world as it is, while fighting like heck to change it. We care about helping the planet, and are determined to learn how to actually help, not just fake recycle. And we know from our own experience that a daily practice helps us level up — meeting our goals with more ease, clarity, and happiness.
BBB-Blossoming into a 30-Day Challenge
Together, for 30 days leading up to the Fall Equinox, each of us is committing to our own daily challenge practice, supporting us to re-harmonize 3 vital energies for change: Block, Build, and Be.
We Block harm and oppression.
We Build creative solutions.
We Be in alignment with our highest truths.
In these dire times of climate chaos, fascist threats, and widening wealth divides, many of us who care about making the world better are consciously choosing to deepen in political theory and action (blocking and building), while also re-rooting in spiritual practice (being). Unless we harmonize these multiple modes, our movement work tends to feel frantic, exhausted, reactive, prone to wish-cycling, and quicker to bitterness or burnout. How can we help each other level up?
Both capitalism and organized religion tend to want to promote a Single Solution that supposedly works for everyone. But at Buddhist Peace Fellowship (BPF), we believe that there are all kinds of bodyminds, and all kinds of paths, lineages, and practices that support us. That's why each of us chooses a 30-day challenge that's right for US.
Where Does the Money Go?
The fundraiser connected with this fun and sweet Challenge helps ensure that Buddhist Peace Fellowship's popular programs remain affordable and accessible to all.
Thousands of people from across the world take BPF's online courses or read our free articles, and hundreds apply to attend our annual Block Build Be gathering. BPF serves and shapes social movements by reminding us that we don't have to choose between being spiritual or political — we can be our full selves!
Buddhist Peace Fellowship is proud to serve a highly diverse community committed to radical change: change that happens at the roots of racial, gender, and economic oppression and transformation. On average, at our annual Block Build Be gatherings,
85% of folks identify as Black, Indigenous, Asian, or People of Color
80% identify as queer, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or pansexual
25% identify as trans, gender nonconforming, genderqueer, or two-spirit
24% identify as chronically ill or disabled.
Together we grow collective wisdom, and generous giving toward wealth redistribution is a foundational part of our economic ethos.
THANK YOU for helping us continue to offer this work!
With metta and solidarity,
BBB Blossom Team
