Sharing History Through Engaging Public Spaces
The Baxter Springs Historical Society has always been focused on meeting people where they are and engaging them with the history of our community. To accomplish that task, we are building the Baxter Springs Historical Society Roadside Park at 938 Military Ave. in Baxter Springs, Ks. Built on land generously donated by Mr. Roger McCallister, the park creates a public space where people will enjoy spending time and have a chance to learn about the national significance of our community.
To officially name the park, the Baxter Springs Historical Society will be hosting a naming contest on behalf of the Hartley Family, and they will select from the three finalists. To submit a naming suggestion, either list it in the comment field along with your donation or send an e-mail with the subject line "Baxter Park Name Contest" to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The park will include a custom Baxter Springs mural where guests can experience the essence of our community as a place of healing for native people, an industrial hub as the first cowtown in Kansas, our unique experience during the American Civil War, and more.
It will also include a statue plaza to commemorate Baxter Springs' importance as the first cowtown in Kansas, with a longhorn statue surrounded by bricks and placards recognizing the community members who have supported the project.
The significance of Route 66 will be recognized with an large map where visitors can trace the path of the Route across the United States.
Green space will beautify the area and provide a location where guests can relax and enjoy an afternoon.
Community Benefits Supported by the Project
• Create a “Gateway to Downtown” and increase foot traffic to community businesses
• Improves the visibility of Baxter Springs as a significant Route 66 destination
