I am a member of the Southern Maine Workers' Center (SMWC) because I believe that people-powered movements, founded upong human rights principles, that seek to empower people and their communities through equitable, grassroots processes, are paramount to the existence of a politcally healthy, dignity-centric, and fair society. SMWC's work is neither quick nor easy, but it is sustainable.
My involvement with SMWC over the last 5+ years has involved travel from Ellsworth to Saco, collaborations with the Maine State Nurses Association and the Lewiston YWCA, and countless meetings with Mainers sharing personal stories about their experiences with our healthcare system, employment issues, and immigration, to name a few. As a current member of the SMWC Board, and as a lawyer here in Maine, I am most excited about the work being done by the Work With Dignity Committee, especially the Worker Support Hotline and Legal Clinic--a collaborative project between SMWC and the Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project--which connects workers in need of legal assistance with a team of supportive, compassionate, and knowledgeable Clinic members, support staff, and volunteer attorneys
SMWC has given me so much and I'm hoping folks reading this, especially those unfamiliar with SMWC, will be encouraged to donate to SMWC now, no matter how small the donation.
If my goal of raising $250 is reached by February 9th, I promise to sing whatever song is suggested by the person who makes the largest donation to SMWC for this Karaoke Fundraiser.
