The Catskill Center for Independence is a non-Profit organization assisting any person with a disability since 1989. We serve Otsego, Delaware, Schoharie and Chenango Counties. If you would like to know more about who we help and how, Please visit us at
One of the services we provide to individuals with disabilities (free of charge) is durable medical equipment. We take donations of Wheelchairs, walkers, motorized scooters, hospital beds, Hoyer lift and so much more. We do it because we know there are SO many people in our counties that fall between the cracks of not qualifying for help because they make a few dollars over the extremely low limit. Most of us cannot afford these items especially when the disability happens suddenly and often don’t have time to wait around for insurance providers to help them over the course of 3-6 months. So in an effort to stem this issue we take in and donate these items free of charge. It is truly one of the best moments of our day when folks call and are in dire need and find out that we can not only help them, but it’s free! The disbelief that someone would help them for free, then moves to thankfulness and a heartfelt thanks and that is all we need to continue each day.
Currently we have a 12x16 shed that we store items in, but as you can see from the photos the donations are coming in so fast we have run out of room, donations litter our halls and rooms intended for office workers. We contacted the Amish Barn Company and they helped us out with a 10% discount to help us move forward and invited us to look. We have found a suitable 12x40 shed that would enable us to clear out our main offices and neatly organize the donations, thereby increasing our efficiency and ability to serve more of the population but at a cost of $7,500 for the land preparation and delivery of the Barn/Shed.
As a non-profit we have to be creative to raise the money for items such as these as the State has kept all independent living Center at a level funded status for the past 13 years though all costs associated with running our Center have increased exponentially. If you would like to help but can’t afford to help financially, please consider sharing on your social media platforms. Our consumers and our Center would be very grateful.
