Balticon is the annual Maryland-based festival celebrating all aspects of science science fiction and fantasy through writing and related pursuits in art, gaming, cosplay and film. This the second year that the Covid pandemic prevents presenting an in-person Balticon, something the all-volunteer Baltimore Science Fiction Society, Inc (BSFS) had done 53 years in a row without interruption.
In addition to giving Sci-Fi fans four full days of fun and education, proceeds from Balticon support year-round activities offered free of charge to all in our building i at 3310 East Baltimote Street Baltimore City. Our building, a formermovie theater, is located at the junction of the Patterson Park and Highlandtown neighborhoods, at the northeast corner of the Highlandtown Arts District. BSFS is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization.

Each Balticon features an auction to raise money used by BSFS Books for Kids to place books in the homes of lower income children in Baltimore City. Helping young people develop literacy with home libraries is an important commitment of BSFS. Last year, we did not let the pandemic stop this important work and made grants from our savings to the Enoch Pratt Public Library, the Patterson Park Public Charter School, and the St. Francis Neighborhood Center, which serves impoverished areas in the City’s Reservoir Hill and Penn North neighborhoods.
BSFS is thrilled in presenting a free virtual convention for a second time. It has been painful seeing many other conventions and cultural organizations fold during the last year. We need your contribution in order to hold Balticon 56 in 2022 and keep our other writing awards and activities programs going.
Thank you for giving generously to support science fiction literature and literacy while enjoying the special gifts offered through this Balticon 55 GoFundMe Campaign.
