The Backpack Buddies program is committed to ending childhood hunger in our neighborhood one backpack at a time. Every Friday, program volunteers provide backpacks filled with six nutritious meals and healthy snacks to 25 children in need, ages 5 to 11, so they will not go hungry during the weekend. During the week, these children depend on the free breakfasts and lunches provided by their school.
It costs approximately $800 to feed one child for one year. Backpack Buddies is currently funded solely on donations, bake sale revenue and food collections; the program has now reached the maximum number of children that can be reliably sustained by these donations. Currently there are more than 30 children on the waiting list to receive food backpacks at Stanley Isaacs. Volunteers (including me) run the program, order, pack, and deliver the food. Temple Shaaray Tefila provides in-kind the administrative costs of the program, such as storage space, copying, and any maintenance needs.
