Welcome to the Judith Banos Foundation page!
This is a non-profit organization found by Kelsey and Brianna DeJesus-Banos. It aims to provide children of low-income families around the world with the resources they need to obtain a better education.
The non-profit was started in honor of our mother Judith Banos who came as a refugee to the U.S. during El Salvador's Civil War in 1981. At only 19, she sought to obtain a better education. She received a full scholarship from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. She graduated from there with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Public Health, all while working 3 or more jobs. Our mother, Judith, currently works at UCLA in Early Child Development. Growing up, our mother taught us the importance of education and its ability to open up doors of opportunity. Brianna received her Bachelor's at Cornell University and a Masters in Journalism at Columbia University. Kelsey received her Bachelor's at Florida Institute of Technology and her Masters in Computer Science and Engineering at Harvard University. Because of the sacrifices our mother made, we had the opportunity to attend the best schools in the world. We hope to give other children around the world this same opportunity.
KICK OFF EVENT:
The organization will hold its very first Back-to-School event in August 2021. The event will be held in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. We will be supplying the necessary school supplies to approximately 30 impoverished children who need it most. To do this, we are teaming up with Casa San Juan Diego who supports and cares for the most needy families around the Cabo San Lucas area. All of the staff at Casa San Juan Diego are volunteers. This Back-to-School event will not only be our very first event but it will also be Casa San Juan Diego's first event since the pandemic started!
Our original goal was to host our very first back to school event in El Salvador but due to covid restrictions back in January (which is when El Salvador's school year begins) we decided to instead serve the Mexican community in August since the kids start school in September.
Although Cabo San Lucas is predominantly known for being a huge hot spot for tourism and wealth, there is a large population of poverty and violence just blocks away. The majority of the children come from families who do not have enough money to clothe or feed them. Especially during the pandemic , many have lost their jobs or faced a significant reduction in their daily income. On top of that , the kids are often sent to school with no supplies at all. Most of the time they use a plastic grocery bag as their backpack. Our goal is to provide these children with the basic supplies they need to succeed in school such as a backpack, pens/pencils, folder, etc.
Your donation will help us accomplish the goal of providing the children with supplies that they can use throughout the school year. Any penny counts!
