Baaxal Educacion Waldorf is located in the small fishing village of Puerto Morelos in the State of Quintana Roo, Mexico, on the Carribean Sea between Cancun and Playa del Carmen in the heart of Maya country. The school serves indigenous families and permanent residents through a distinguished K - 7 curriculum.
We love our school. We have been operating successfully for 20 years. We now face a crisis. For many years we have been renting from a generous benefactor, but the option of renting is no longer available. Now we need to purchase the land and buildings and make long-needed repairs. Parents and staff built all the classrooms and will continue to do so, but we need to own the land and have funds for construction materials.
Baaxal is affiliated with the international Waldorf program, which places an emphasis on love of nature, music, art, and building spiritual relationships. We fervently hope to continue our quest for academic and human fulfillment.
HELP US GROW OUR SCHOOL!
We have chosen this form of pedagogy because the first six or seven years of childhood are the most important in human development. During the early years of K - 7th grade, we build broad and resilient foundations that weather the storms of life. Through consistent daily rhythms of the natural world, in an environment of stablility and security, we help children create a deep trust in life.
To achieve our goal we work on three aspects human interaction: sociability, responsibility and creativity.
To promote sociability, our students learn to live with others from varying cultural, social and experiential backgrounds in a harmonious and communicative environment. They learn to respect and help each other, resulting in a more peaceful co-existence.
We promote our responsibility of taking care of our environment. Puerto Morelos is a beautiful place because of the sea, nearby coral reef, the mangroves and the jungle. It is important to take care of this special ecosystem. In our school we live closely with nature, with plants, animals and stones and learn to take responsibility for the planet earth and all the living beings that live here.
What societies today most require are people with imagination and ideas, who are open to new concepts and who are capable of being creative. At Baaxal, we give children space and we encourage the innate creativity in each child for the development of happy beings.
In addition, for consistency we believe in the importance of close communication between teachers and parents of Waldorf children.
In Maya, the word "Baaxal" means playing, which is one of the basic concepts of the Waldorf pedagogy, on which our work is based. In addition, children learn to garden, they learn carpentry, knitting and weaving, along with mathematics and language development.
A small child imitates everything s/he sees, hears and perceives, and in this way s/he can assimilate it. Movement in green areas is of utmost importance for the development of the child's organs and healthy growth of the body itself. Our school has a large space that has trees, flowers, grass, earth and sand. The children live with different domestic animals, including rabbits, ducks, chickens. Additionally there is a wide range of birds and other wild animals in the surrounding jungle.
The interior space of Baaxal has the atmosphere of a house with a kitchen, bathrooms, tables and chairs, space to play and furniture where there are fabrics, wood, seeds and everything that motivates the imagination of the child for his or her play and learning.
"Waldorf school education is not a pedagogical system but an art -- the art of awakening what is actually there within the human being." Rudolf Steiner
