“FIFI” has just completed another successful season with the AirPower History Tour, and we now turn our attention to the upcoming 2020 tour season, which will feature the prospect of the Arsenal of Democracy Washington DC flyover, along with many other exciting stops yet to be announced.
The B-29 Superfortress was the largest and most advanced aircraft of World War II, and is most remembered as the airplane that dropped the atomic bombs on Japan, drawing the war to its conclusion. Of the approximately 4,000 B-29’s built, “FIFI”remains as 1 of only 2 remaining airworthy, and she is arguably the most famous.
“FIFI” was acquired by the CAF in the early 1970s when a group of CAF members found her at the U.S. Navy Proving Ground at China Lake, California. She was rescued and restored and has flown almost 50 years bringing the sights, sounds and smells of World War II aviation history to crowds all around the country.
“FIFI” is the queen of the CAF fleet. Every year the she visits as many as 30 different cities as the feature attraction of the CAF AirPower History Tour (APHT). The APHT travels from coast to coast honoring the men and women who built, maintained and flew in World War II and educating the next generation on their service, courage, honor and sacrifice, attracting large crowds at every tour stop.
Keeping this historic four engine bomber flying is an intense effort. The focus of this year’s 12 Planes of Christmas campaign is the continued funding of ongoing care and maintenance needs of this iconic aircraft. Among the most pressing needs are 3 propeller overhauls, which come at a price tag of $6,000 each. Our goal is to raise $18,000 for this effort though this year’s campaign.
We are proud to have “FIFI”in our care and look forward to keeping her flying for many years to come.
Your contribution will help us get to our goal and keep this amazing airplane touring the country honoring the Greatest Generation and continuing to tell that story to future generations.
