Story

Young Aztecs Rugby Club was founded in 2005 under the the non profit 501c3 San Diego Athletic Club. As the Young Aztecs Rugby Club began to take shape, we talked a lot about the core values that make up the foundation of our club. By combining the joy of rugby with an emphasis on commitment, effort, respect, honesty, sportsmanship and a sense of community, we have been able to make a difference in the lives of many.  Whether you played rugby professionally or have only recently been introduced to the sport, the sense of belonging to a worldwide community is real and will stay with you throughout life. In joining the growing legion of rugby fans around the world, you have given your child the chance to play one of the greatest games along with the opportunity to be part of one of the strongest fraternities and sororities in the world. Wherever you travel, locally or around the globe, you will find you have friends and supporters you never knew. For many of our players, tomorrow is just the beginning.

We now have club programs that support players from 5 to 19 years old along with a continually expanding high school age league that stretches across San Diego County. Our numbers are growing as is the awareness around town that we have something special happening here. Through rugby, we have the opportunity to show our children that everyone can be a positive, confident, successful member of their community.

As we head deeper into the season, we’d like to reiterate some of our goals for the club:

Respect the game, players, coaches, parents and opponents at all times

Embrace all players, regardless of athletic ability

Strive to win, but value sportsmanship and integrity more

Promote a safe and positive environment in which our athletes can participate.

Expect commitment and support from every member of the club

Congratulate great effort wherever you find it

Take responsibility for your actions and your community

Anticipate a community that goes beyond rugby

Live by our code of conduct and behavior

Leave the competition on the field; treat our opponents as family, before and after the match

Rugby is a life sport; it’s one of the few sports that can be played from childhood to well into your sixties. Our efforts are focused on educating and developing student athletes (boys and girls), between the ages of 5 and 19, in all aspects of the sport. We believe that through rugby, anyone, regardless of physical ability or experience, can develop the skills necessary to excel on and off the field. Hard work, honesty, respect for yourself and others, and a desire to contribute to the community are some of the characteristics that we strive to demonstrate and develop in the children involved in our program.

This legendary game mixes strength, speed and agility, where players of every size and shape play an important role. Our goal is to make this global sport accessible to children in San Diego. We are a non-profit organization. Our entire staff is voluntary, including 65 coaches, 15 administrative positions and more than 25 community members who regularly volunteer their time, on and off the field. No one with in our organization is paid. We work to keep our registration fees to a minimum, between $100 and $275 per season, all inclusive, depending on age.

Thank you for your consideration of supporting our club!

Sincerely,

Aztec Youth Rugby Executive Board
