Building Geotourism Opportunities for the Wisconsin Ledge and its Wineries
The federally recognized grape growing region known as the Wisconsin Ledge American Viticultural Area (AVA) has been in existence since April of 2012. The Niagara Escarpment Resource Network (NERN) has been a partner with Trout Springs Winery in obtaining this national designation and, moving forward, is always trying to find more opportunities to promote and market the AVA, while also providing opportunities for additional education about its geologic resources.
Our proposal to erect a monument sign, showcasing the Wisconsin Ledge AVA map and its associated wineries and vineyards, has recently been accepted in concept by the Brown County Recreation and Education Committee and will be going to the Brown County Board in December of 2020. This monument would be built at Way-Morr County Park in Southern Brown County, which lies proportionally in the center - North and South and East and West - of the Wisconsin Ledge AVA.
Main Goals of this Campaign:
1. Bring awareness to the existence of the Wisconsin Ledge AVA and the specialness of this Federal designation.
2. Increase knowledge and recognition of the unique landscape that contributes to your winery’s high-quality products!
3. Improve awareness of what the Niagara Escarpment is and the sensitive nature of its environment.
The estimated cost of this monument is $10,000. There are 24 bonded wineries that lie within the AVA and we are asking for financial support from each winery and vineyard in the amount of a $300-$500 donation to help defray the cost for this project. Your winery’s name, location, and web address would appear on the AVA map for tourists to seek out. This special one-time donation will help make the monument, and your winery, a great success for many, many years to come. We will post all wineries who have contributed with amounts on the NERN and LNRP websites, and we will also provide a 40”x 50” frameable color map of the AVA map depicting locations to all wineries that donate.
Niagara Escarpment Resource Network is a proud partner of Lakeshore Natural Resource Partnership (LNRP).
