Since 1879, the Sioux YMCA has been serving the youth and families of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation and surrounding area. The need today is as simple, yet essential as it was back then: to provide our youth with the skills, experiences and opportunities to be successful, healthy individuals.
However, achieving this goal is no easy task. Those living here are faced with issues of chronic alcohol and drug abuse, high unemployment rates and the highest child poverty rates in the Northern Hemisphere second only to Haiti. The Sioux YMCA attempts to tackle issues such as these all without any source of steady income: all of our programs are funded through donations and grants.
Which is why this October we will be attempting to complete the Auckland Marathon in Auckland, New Zealand. Our team of runners will be raising money to ensure that the Sioux YMCA can continue to deliver on it's mission: to develop and strengthen the children and families in our reservation communities so they can fulfill their greatest individual and collective potential, spiritually, mentally, and physically.
Thank you in advance for your generosity. Special thanks to the YMCA of New Zealand for their support in this endeavor.
