Students in our Woodside Houses Community Center have been invited to the Youth Bike Summit in Atlanta, Georgia by Bike NYC to make a presentation about their experiences cycling in the Five Borough Bike Marathon in 2018 and the tri-state tour they did last Summer.
This is a life-changing opportunity for these students, primarily from public housing, to engage with diverse peers, exercise their leadership skills, and learn so much. We are raising money to cover transportation costs, meals, and accommodations to allow the students to attend.
The Youth Bike Summit is a three-day conference geared toward youth, bikes, education, advocacy, and leadership. People from different disciplines, backgrounds, and ages gather to learn, share, network, and explore how bicycling can be a catalyst for positive social change. The Summit features and emphasizes youth-led keynote speakers, hands-on workshops, panel presentations, and many other opportunities for youth and adults to exchange ideas about what biking can mean for children, teens, families, schools, communities, and for our planet.
The SCS Community Center at Woodside Houses provides opportunities for children, teenagers, and adults to participate in structured after-school programs and drop-in activities including performing arts and music, athletics, computers, reading, chess, and more. Health fairs and other collaborations with local community organizations bring together local residents and celebrate the community’s diversity.
