A Message from Our CEO
Since 1962, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Athens has been offering life-impacting services to the youth of Athens-Clarke County. We have faced many challenges over the years, but nothing like what we are dealing with during the COVID-19 crises.
While our Clubs are physically closed, the needs of our members are great. Our program staff have responded by offering our members virtual experiences utilizing Zoom, social media and other digital platforms. Virtual programming is offered in areas such as Health & Physical Fitness, Character Development, Academic Enrichment, Arts and Games.
Meanwhile, we are planning for our biggest and best summer program ever. Our goal is to engage 350 members in fun, active, high-impact programming with a focus on:
o Health & Fitness: Our members have been sitting at home for several months. It’s time to get them moving and exercising again. We will serve two USDA approved meals a day.
o Academic Enrichment: We want to make sure our members enter the next school year ready for success. We are going to add academic coaches to our staff this summer to offer fun, engaging academic enrichment activities.
o Personal Hygiene and Safe Practice: Even we adults have let our personal hygiene routines slip during our shelter-in-place period. It’s time to get back to normal personal hygiene practices and to learn the importance of handwashing.
However, we are facing tremendous financial challenges and need your help. We have had to postpone our annual Steak & Steak Dinner, our biggest fundraiser of the year. Because we cannot provide certain services to our members, we are not able to meet some of our government grant requirements - resulting in significant lost revenue. All totaled, we are looking at a potential loss of income totaling over $150,000.
We know many of you and your businesses are hurting as well. For those of you who are able, we are asking that you support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Athens during these tough and challenging times. Now, more than ever the children of Athens-Clarke County are depending on the Boys & Girls Club. Your support will allow us to be there for our kids.
