Seguimos Adelante, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was founded in the summer of 2019 in response to a change in U.S. immigration policy known as the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP). MPP has trapped thousands of asylum-seekers in some of the most dangerous cities in Mexico as their asylum cases are adjudicated in the US. Families fleeing unimaginable horrors in their home countries have been stranded at the border in a continuation of those nightmares for over a year. Now they face a global pandemic.
Seguimos Adelante has been on the ground in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico working with asylum-seekers before and throughout the pandemic, and support is needed now more than ever. As the pandemic has raged on, lack of income from lost jobs in Mexico and decreased remittances from family members in the United States have led to devastating food shortages and inadequate access to certain medical care. We work closely with asylum-seekers to deliver the support they require on an individual basis. In many cases, families have been separated as a result of MPP, as some family members are stranded in Mexico while others have reached their destination in the United States. Those still in Mexico require urgent and ongoing relief.
A different kind of non-profit...
We are not a traditional organization with large administrative staff or high overhead. In fact, we have no paid staff and rely on a small group of volunteers committed to being present and on the ground with the families we serve. This enables us to be highly flexible and respond immediately to emergency situations as they arise, maximizing the value of your contribution and getting resources directly into the hands of those who need them most.
How can you help?
Contributions to this fund will allow us to continue offering the services listed below as well as give us the flexibility to respond to the unexpected.
FOOD & CRITICAL SUPPLIES
We have partnered with other local responders in order to build a program of food distribution throughout the city to asylum-seekers in need. In addition, we regularly deliver critical supplies like diapers, baby formula, toilet paper and personal hygiene items to those both in and out of shelters.
We deliver cleaning products, hand sanitizers, thermometers, gloves, masks and other PPE to ensure shelters have the tools they need to defend against COVID-19. We also facilitate free, rapid PCR testing to detect cases as early as possible.
MEDICAL AND DENTAL SUPPORT
One of the biggest challenges faced by asylum-seekers stuck in MPP is gaining access to medical care. Seguimos Adelante steps in to provide access to dignified medical treatment. From children with heart conditions or throat infections to adults who need tooth extractions or diabetes management, we facilitate appointments and cover the cost of medical and dental services for asylum-seekers throughout the city.
Living in the Chihuahuan Desert means excruciating summers and freezing winters, so we work to outfit shelters with things like heaters, hot water heaters, fans and air-conditioning units. Whether it’s paying gas and electricity bills or picking up supplies to fix a broken window, we want to make sure that shelter needs are covered.
