National studies show that 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ, as compared to 7% of the general population. These numbers are likely conservative, as youth may not want to out themselves when seeking services. Why are the numbers so staggering? Conflict with families related to their sexual orientation and gender identity is the most common cause of LGBTQ youth homelessness. After coming out to their families or being discovered to be LGBTQ, half of all teens get a negative reaction. More than 1 in 4 are thrown out. Many others are abused both verbally and physically or made the focus of their family’s dysfunction.
My goal on the day of the event is to pull 250lbs, and I owuld like to match dollar for pound. All money I raise will be kept regionally in Richmond, and will go to Diversity and Side-By-Side.
Diversity Richmond serves as Central Virginia’s LGBTQ+ community center, providing social events, free meeting spaces, financial support and other resources for the community. Diversity Richmond envisions a community where LGBTQ+ citizens are treated with respect and dignity, and their unique gifts are championed and celebrated, thereby strengthening our community. Side by Side is Central Virginia’s LGBTQ+ youth organization, providing support groups, counseling, and services. They are dedicated to creating supportive communities where Virginia’s LGBTQ+ youth can define themselves, belong, and flourish.
