Help Arts as Healing bring remote art classes into the homes of cancer patients and others with chronic illness.
Serious illness leaves patients feeling isolated and stressed. The Arts As Healing program helps these patients stop focusing on their disease and get lost in the creative process with our free weekly art lessons at hospitals and the AAH Studio. For AAH, Covid-19 was a double whammy, further isolating our patient/artists who are immune compromised by their disease and separating them from the personal support and relief they receive from our program. Our response and our cause is to bring the healing to our patient/artists as they shelter at home, providing creative challenges and remote art classes that unite everyone through online networks. Here is what we are doing to sustain our cause during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In March, we started a Facebook Arts As Healing Foundation Group called: AAH Studio Art Share and within 48 hours, we had over 40 patients sign up. The First art experience offered was an At-Home 15-day Creative Challenge. Each day we supplied a word prompt to stimulate an artistic creation that was then posted on Facebook for all to share and enjoy. The response was amazing. “Toilet paper” prompted the creation of silver earrings resembling this much-in-demand item; “pet” became a watercolor of a lamb; “underwater” a water beach scene by someone stranded in Florida; “hands” a lobster made out of hands dipped in red paint; “together” a puzzle painting; “time” a paper plate clock collage; “ friend” a homemade friendship bracelet; and “silly”, an elderly mother with Hello Kitty sunglasses.
With our first challenge completed, we have moved on to providing art lessons on Zoom. Our first Zoom class focused on figure drawing with 2 artist leaders; it lasted 2 ½ hours. Sign-up was limited to 20 and the class filled in three days. We will continue our home art classes directed by 8 artist/volunteers leading classes in various media. All classes will have a monitor to check on chat, and another person to observe and make suggestions. We are preparing art supply kits which can be safely picked up or delivered so patient/artists have the materials needed for each class.
We need your help to support our cause which is a lifeline for the patients we serve. Our fundraising events and activities have been cancelled but our cause is still critical. We need to supply art kits for our remote classes and support overhead expenses for our AAH Studio space. Please join us as we come together in response to Covid-19 pandemic. In this time of need, your support is more important than ever in helping us serve our patient community.
