Music for High Schools makes a powerful impact on the lives of students by teaching them how to play music.
Today, 16 million students attend high school in the US. But almost half of all high school music students, 7-8 million students, must do without personal music instruction because after Grade 8, lessons are no longer part of the academic requirements. About 80% of students stop playing or don’t continue lessons due to affordability or lack of easy availability.
Yet, the research is very clear that school students who are learning to play a musical instrument have stronger vocabularies, are more engaged in all their academic classes and attend school more regularly.
Our primary goal is to develop and test Music Certificate Program taught by master musicians for grades 9 through 12 that would be unlike anything offered today. In addition to traditional band and orchestra instrument instruction, a special focus will be spent on the production of Mariachi music.
This pilot program will offer free and extremely low-cost online musical instrument instruction to 10 under-served high schools to demonstrate our concept and program offerings within the formal education system.
