Studies show that the most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to age-appropriate print. As you may know, ARISE2Read Jackson-Madison County is committed to providing a caring volunteer to help 2nd graders memorize sight words. AIMSWeb testing through JMCSS has proven the positive impact our volunteers are having on reading achievement. However, we are also sensitive to another piece of the solution to reading failure: the importance of having books in the home. Reading is like any other learned skill. If a student learns to play basketball at school but doesn't have a ball or hoop at home, he will not practice and improve his skill. ARISE has partnered with Kiwanis Club of Jackson to provide every 2nd grader at our five Title I schools a backpack with books for summer reading. CrowdRise will enable us to expand that project and to include even more books for each student. Will you help us spread the word? "A student who finishes 2nd grade without being able to read has only a 1 in 4 chance of reading at grade level by the end of elementary school. ARISE2Read is not a recovery program. We aren't waiting for students to fail before we invest. Please give now!
