I've decided to participate in my first half marathon ever, the United Airlines half on 3/15/20! I'll be running on behalf of the organization I've been volunteering for the past five years, Apex for Youth. I need to raise $1,000 and would be extremely grateful if you would like to support me in my goal. The money would go to Apex for Youth so they can continue to provide mentoring, educational, and athletic programs to under served immigrant youth in NYC. In return for your donation, I'd love to send you snail mail as a thank you (I'd like to think I write great cards). No donation is too small!
My Role in Apex for Youth
I've been volunteering with the organization for five years now as an elementary test prep tutor working with 4th and 5th grade students. I feel a deep personal connection to this organization and what it stands for. I wish to guide and support the younger generation with the goal of boosting their confidence, helping them academically, and being a mentor they can turn to for help.
What does Apex for Youth do?
Apex for Youth delivers possibilities to under served immigrant youth by recruiting volunteers to be positive role models for them through mentoring and educational programs for students from 1st grade to 12th grade. Many Asian youth in NYC come from struggling immigrant families where their parents did not attend college and do not know how to navigate the American education system. Often times their parents work seven days a week and are unable to spend enough time at home. On top of this, language barriers and racial issues often affect the confidence and mental health of many Asian youth in school socially and academically, with the repercussions of this following them into their young adult and adulthood.
