Founded in 1992, Apex for Youth delivers possibilities to underserved Asian and immigrant youth in NYC.
I choose to run and volunteer for APEX because the mission of APEX speaks to my heart-I deeply relate to the students served by APEX. As a First-Generation immigrant I understand the struggles Immigrant students face in the school system. As my parents were busy trying to build the American Dream and ensuring that there was food on the table; I was solely responsible for navigating the school system both academically and socially. I was fortunate enough to have mentors, teachers, and guidance counselors who helped me understand after school programs, the importance of grades, and how to develop interpersonal relationships with peers. Although I had amazing people around me, I still struggled to truly understand how to properly succeed in school and with friends. Although I found the experience sometimes lonely and frustrating, I was able to attend college and graduate school. I am so happy to find APEX because I cannot help but think how APEX could have helped me during my youth. If I had this program while growing up, I would not have been so scared or anxious as I tried to succeed both in academically and socially.
Apex for Youth currently serves students from 1st to 12th grade in New York City. Our suite of programs begins in elementary school, providing students with structured academic and social activities to improve their communication skills and provide opportunities to interact with adults. In the middle school and high school years, Apex encourages more personalized one-to-one mentoring to build deeper relationships with youth and address their specific needs. High school students also can access more rigorous academic assistance from Apex to prepare them for college.
Through youth developing strong relationships with positive role models who volunteer their service, Apex’s goal is for its youth to become Apex volunteers themselves in the future: confident, college-ready individuals who want to give back to the community.
