Addressing Educational Inequality:
Even before the pandemic, we were already facing the ongoing epidemic of educational inequality. School closures and distance learning have exacerbated those gaps, especially for students of color and students from lower-income communities.
As COVID-19 drags on and the likelihood of school resuming virtual learning in the Spring increases, some of this gap remains unaddressed. This gap is especially pertinent among charter schools that don’t neatly fall within a school district’s jurisdiction for funding.
Who are we helping?
With the generous support of STEAM:Coders and with research from ICFuture, APEX has identified a need for Wi-fi hotspots in Pasadena Rosebud Academy, a charter school serving mostly students from historically socioeconomically-disadvantaged backgrounds.
In lieu of our yearly YES (Youth Education Summit) due to the ongoing pandemic, we aim to raise $5600 for Pasadena Rosebud Academy. This money will be used to purchase Wi-Fi hotspots and a year of internet for the students, as many of them are forced to share their internet connectivity at home with multiple people; severely diminishing their learning experience.
Breakdown of costs:
Identified students in need: 20
Hotspots at $100 each: 20 x $100 = $2000
A year of internet service at $15/month: 20 x 12 x $15 = $3600
Total = $ 5600.00
To reach this goal, STEAM:Coders has been generous enough to MATCH donations up to HALF of the required total!($2800). APEX will donate $1200 as seed money for this fundraiser.
To get the most bang for our buck, we will work with Human-IT, a social responsible company that repurposes donated technology with the goal of “closing the digital divide by giving those in need electronics free of charge.” We will use the funds to source the equipment from Human IT, who will then distribute the equipment to the Pasadena Rosebud Academy.
If our initial goal is met, we will research other non-profits which can benefit from this fund.
