It was the middle of the pandemic and there were not enough clear instructions on the course of action except to stay at home and follow social distancing. But the question kept coming up in his mind. How can we stay at a distance from our own family members? It was confusing and there was some unrest in the chest. People who had a basic sense of nutrition and health were reducing their food intake because of staying at home and they were trying to stay active by walking indoors or using the internet to follow exercise regimens stay fit. This was mostly the younger folk. But the elders and most others were worried because of their age and didn't know how to manage their time. They were not thinking about exercise anymore and this was not even a priority for them, Thinking thus, they underwent tremendous stress leading to overeating, sitting on the couch for long hours to watch the TV and a host of other bad habits that followed. As the pandemic intensity outside the home was growing, there was an epidemic happening inside the home - the sitting epidemic. Losing motivation and losing interest in taking care of one's body led to the inner epidemic take it's toll on those locked up at home. Slowly, prolonged sitting led to the sugars convert into fat and make their way into the blood circulation. It started blocking a few major arteries and led to sleepless nights, more stress and anxiety combined with the news which only added fuel to the fire of distress. As days passed the blocks of fat in the arteries kept on building up and one early morning when the environment was cool and he was not able to take another deep breath, Mr Sim suffered a cardiac arrest. His wife did not know what to do because he was panting and asking for something which she couldn't understand, and she was visibly shaken. There was nobody to call for help as their kids stay abroad. Making sense of the situation, Mrs Sim wanted to call for an ambulance but she couldn't muster courage looking at her husband's condition. The arrest finally killed Mr Sim and his children were fatherless. This may be a hypothetical case, but doesn't it happen too often to someone we know? There is no sense of medical knowledge or nutrition in most households and not many are aware of the dangers of prolonged sitting. Inactivity kills more people than we can imagine. Moving forward, moving left, moving right, moving any which way just to move our body is better than sitting about for extended periods. Come, let's prevent this from happening to someone who we consider our near and dear ones, let's prevent it from happening to us by staying active and being proactive about our health. Donate now to the American Heart Association's Anti-sitting campaign even if it is a single dollar amount so we can educate the masses on basic cardiac life support skills and what to do in case an emergency arises in our home.
