What is Anthropos Arts?
Anthropos Arts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to connect low-income youth with professional musicians, cultivating confidence, integrity, and life skills through musical instruction and mentorship.
Our students get free instruction and mentoring from some of the best musicians in the country, performance opportunities at Austin’s seminal venues and events, and exposure to a wide range of music as both audience members and performers.
What makes Anthropos Arts work?
Anthropos Arts is unique in several respects. Our students perform better in school than their peers who are not mentored, they have fewer disciplinary problems and higher grade retention rates, and more of them graduate from high school and go on to college.
We are the only organization that:
Has a global focus, maintaining an intentionally diverse repertoire allowing us to expose students and audiences to artists, styles and cultures from across the globe. Our students learn and perform music from Cuba, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, India, Serbia, Jordan, Iran, Angola, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Sudan, Taiwan, Romania, and all across the US.
Provides individual, free music lessons.
Focuses on solo and improvisational performance to build confidence and musical ability. Every student gives at least one improvised solo a year in a public concert.
Collaborates with band directors and administrators at the schools we serve to augment the music education and opportunities they provide.
The benefits of Anthropos Arts programs are profound, affecting many aspects of students’ lives, from overall academic success to self-discipline and beyond. It has even become a pathway to college. Over the past 12 years, in schools with alarmingly low graduation rates, 100% of our senior students have graduated from high school, with more than 80% continuing to college on scholarship!
