Welcome back to my annual fundraiser to support the VAD Foundation, a small non-profit that supports education and grassroots community development in South Sudan.
2019 was a big year for the VAD Foundation. One of its major new projects, the Alok Girls’ Academy, grew from 160 students to over 500. Less than two years old, Alok is already one of the highest-ranked schools in the region—where young women face incredible challenges just to pursue their education.
The organization also expanded its community programming: vocational training for out-of-school youth; support for sustainable farming, animal husbandry, and fish farming; and community health programs. These efforts respond to immediate needs in the community and will be a major focus for expansion in 2020.
The VAD Foundation was established by Valentino Achak Deng and author Dave Eggers, whose novel "What Is the What" tells Valentino's early life story as a South Sudanese refugee. The VAD Foundation has spent the last decade in South Sudan (amid civil war and other challenges) working to increase access to quality education, improve girls’ education, create teacher-training programs, and empower youth to build a peaceful future for the country. After helping run the organization in its early years, I now serve on its board. For more information, please visit www.vadfoundation.org.
Thanks for any contribution to help make this work possible. With your support, the VAD Foundation will continue to make a difference by offering peace through education in South Sudan.
