I am back again! Same historic course in the same beautiful city, but a different cause that is near and dear to my heart. This time I will be running 26.2 (well, really a lot more than that if we are counting training miles) for the Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL). If you have met me, one of the first things you likely have learned about me is my love of animals and my commitment to advocating for them.
This love started at a very young age. For as long as I can remember I have been around a motley crew of rescue critters. I grew up in a household that had six cats and a dog all at one time (thanks, Mom!) I have since adopted two of my own rescue cats – Manny and Cleo. Manny and Cleo can be seen here resting comfortably (see photos - Manny, snoozing on the pink blanket and Cleo curled up in the sun on the teal blanket) thanks to the relentless efforts of the staff and volunteers at organizations like the Animal Rescue League. They are fortunate enough to have found their FURever home, where they are loved, cared for, and receive the medical attention they need. Isn’t this the life every animal deserves?
For 120 years, ARL has responded to the needs of animals and the people who care about them. They are often the first to respond in situations of abuse, neglect, and other animal related emergencies. With over 540 dedicated volunteers and 100 staff members, ARL lends unwavering support to local animals, families, and neighborhoods. Last year alone, ARL served more than 16,900 animals in need. To give you a sense of what some of this great work looks like:
· 3,444 animals found their FURever homes
· 5,807 animals were given access to high quality, affordable veterinary care right in their community.
· 2,961 animals were helped in cases of cruelty and neglect.
ARL is thrilled to be celebrating its 10th year in the John Hancock Non-Profit Marathon Program for the 124th running of the Boston Marathon on April 20, 2020 and I am honored to have the privledge of fundraising for this amazing organization and crossing that finish line for the second time on Boylston Street. Please join me in supporting the work of ARL. Together we can help keep animals safe and healthy and support the heroic efforts of the people on the front lines doing this much needed work day in and day out.
