Healing Paws Cat Sanctuary Inc. is one of the few ALL feral non profit sanctuaries that specialize ONLY in feral with ongoing health and disability issues. Here they are monitored 24/7 by trained medical staff. At the time of this incident we were home to aprox 90 fulltime residents with issues ranging from ear, eye and skin issues to kidney, heart and gi issue... along with some that are missing eyes, limbs and deaf.. Just to name a few of the kind of feral that call us home. As some know Animal Control showed up at our doors back on October 1, 2020 due to an “anonymous” complaint. They proceeded to harasses us about the number of feral cats we had on and in the sanctuary even though we have a registered colony on the sanctuary property. Animal control proceeded to tell us that ALL feral that was inside the actual sanctuary at that time HAD to be kicked out and we needed to “throw open the doors and let them fend for themselves” no matter of health or disability issues. They then proceeded to tell us even though we have a register colony we are still breaking the local residential pet law of having more then 5 pets on the property. They also claimed 3 of the 90 residents were on “deaths door”. By the time they left (6hrs later) they had cited us for 49 violations which were 46 for failure to RV and county license the feral cats and 3 for inhumane care. We were then told if we complied with what they asked which was to remove ALL cats from inside the sanctuary and have the other cats vetted they would not proceed with filing charges. In the week that followed, against ALL my medical training and my gut instinct we moved all the feral out of the sanctuary and had the ones that needed to be seen by a vet seen by our vet. All 3 were found to be in as best of health as they could be for their age (all are seniors) and their medical conditions… NONE were found to be sick (Uri etc) or on deaths door as animal control claimed at the time. Well even though we complied with what they asked animal control STILL filed charges against us. We are now looking at almost $7000.00 in fines, court cost and vet services if we are forced to vaccinate and license them if we lose. Our court date is set for March 9th and we have a lawyer but unfortunately since there are no laws on the books for rescues she has told us to be prepared to lose on the 46 vac/lic charges. If that happens it will CLOSE us as we can not afford to pay this amount and due to the fact that all our residents have life long health issues and are feral they will ALL most likely be killed. We all know just how people including animal control feel about feral cats. In the 5 years the sanctuary has been open we have helped 100s of feral. From local TNR and helping sick/injured feral in other colonies to NEVER turning away a feral that needed our medical help and a furever home UNTIL NOW. Not only has this shut us down until we know our fate it has also stopped us from being able to help the MANY as we get multiple calls/texts/emails daily that need us. It also has cost the life of many of our residents that they forced us to kick outside. Some were hit by cars, some killed by predators and others poisoned by neighbors. An some just disappeared. Those that do find their way back to us are showing up injured or sick. The sanctuary has taking in feral that needed our help from as far away as the FL Keys and GA (we are located in Ormond beach, FL). This is why we are PLEADING for your help now. We have already accumulated over $1000.00 just in added medical care in the last few months due to sick and injured feral that normaly lived safe and sound inside that sanctuary and now we are looking at almost $7000.00 in fines and court costs if we lose on March 9th. EVERY $1.00 that you can donate helps us be able to hopefully remain open once this is all said and done. Those of you that know us know we RARELY ask for help or donations for the sanctuary and we cover all costs both medical (which run $485.00 monthly for flea and other meds) NOT including any vet trips to all supply costs for food and litter etc (which runs $780.00 a month) Now we are begging for your help. The feral here at the sanctuary have no where else to go if we are forced to close due to this. SO PLEASE donate if able and SHARE SHARE SHARE. Thank you and please also check out our page at Healingpawscatsanctuary, org to find out all about us and the feral that call us home.
