Hi I’m Anika. I’m a 20 year old student from San Diego. This fundraiser is about saving our democracy.
ONE THIRD OF ELIGIBLE AMERICANS DO NOT VOTE. And let's be very clear: this is intentional. Through a variety of voter suppression techniques, communities of color have been intentionally disenfranchised since we won the right to vote.
This fundraiser was originally intended to emphasize that building political power for these communities is essential to standing up to the law enforcement lobby.
It goes beyond that, though. Voter supression affects virtually EVERY ISSUE you care about. When democracy erodes and only certan (white and/or wealthy) voices are amplified in our political process, we do not see the progressive policies we've been demanding year after year.
From the ACLU:
· 1 in 13 Black Americans cannot vote due to disenfranchisement laws.
· 70% of Georgia voters purged in 2018 were Black
· Counties with larger BIPOC populations have fewer polling sites and poll workers per voter.
If you care about economic inequality, climate change, local COVID response, defunding the police, or Donald Trump losing in November, you should care about voter supression.
That’s why I want to help raise money for this black voter mobilization organization. No, small sums of money will not radically restructure our deeply flawed political and justice systems. But I do believe encouraging civic engagement will get us there eventually.
If you donate any amount, I will mail you a mini canvas (hand painted by me!)
Note: ALL the funds raised will go towards BVM, the charity gofundme does this automatically.
