As you likely know, I've had the privilege of serving as the CEO & Executive Director for the Philadelphia Film Society for the last 11+ years. During the time, we've experienced our ups and downs, but no matter what, we've worked consistently towards utilizing film's unique power of inclusion and accessibility to inspire, educate, challenge and entertain. From 2008 on, we've produced 11 excited editions of the Philadelphia Film Festival, launched our year-round Greenfield student screening and the Movies on the Block community partnership screening series, took over operations of the PFS Roxy and ownership of the now-Philadelphia Film Center, and curated hundreds of screenings all over the greater Philadelphia area.
The COVID-19 pandemic, which halted operations and forced our theaters closed in mid-March, hit the Film Society particularly hard. To ensure that we are able to sustain operations through the end of the year, and to deliver to Philadelphia both the 29th Philadelphia Film Festival as well as other year-round film, education and community programming for which the Film Society is renowned and relied on, we need your support now.
While the Film Society has worked to reduce costs wherever possible, including a significant reduction to staff, there is still a projected budget shortfall of $300,000 for this fiscal year. The Film Society’s Board of Directors has committed $150,000, as a challenge to the community to match this amount and help the Film Society cover its budgetary gap.
If you have attended one of our screenings in the past, if you love film, if you value what the Film Society delivers for the Philadelphia arts and culture community, please consider donating now. Your support is both invaluable and incredibly appreciated.
