I am looking forward to running my first ever marathon in New York this November. I am excited to be supporting Minding Your Mind, an important organization that is dedicated to spreading mental health awareness and education to adolescents, teens and young adults, their parents, teachers and school administrators.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly one in five U.S. adults lives with a mental illness. Many of these issues surface early in a child's/adolescent's formative years, and often given either lack of awareness or stigma these issues get left untreated and worsen over time. Some research suggests that as many of 50% or more of those with a diagnosable mental illness do not receive treatment.
Minding Your Mind is dedicated to supporting children and young adults with resources that provide information regarding signs and symptoms of mental disorders, in addition to stressing that they are treatable and treatment is available. I was startled to discover that suicide is the second leading cause of death in individuals between 10-24 in the United States (after accidents). Through awareness programs and speaker series in schools conducted by Minding Your Mind, hopefully a greater number of youth will discover the support and resources they need to control and manage their mental health afflictions and live more fulfilled and happier lives. Please join me in supporting this very worthwhile cause.
