Many of you already know my story: Diagnosed in 2012 with breast cancer and after a year of treatment I was clear for 6 years. In October, 2018, I was diagnosed with stage 4, Metastatic Breast Cancer, to the bones and liver. Reseach says the mean survival with my HR-/HER2 + receptors, is 3 years (which would mean I am half way through my survival). However, my fundraising goal is intentional : $2030. I want to survive 10 more years until 2030. While this walk is not specific to metastatic breast cancer, it donates to a variety of cancer causes. No one deserves this diagnosis or prognosis and money funds research that provides cures or prolongs a quality life for those with cancer.
I am choosing the 18 mile walk knowing that I likely will not be able to complete the 18 miles. Training is a Sisyphean task: I get my treatment every three weeks and feel like I have the flu for 4-5 days. Then I pick up my walking again, feeling like I have started at ground zero, and I use the remainder of the three weeks to gain more miles and more momentum. Then treatment arrives and I start again.
I want to encourage people to sign up for the 18 miles and complete what they can. I probably will also need a driver to come pick up along the route. Let me know if you want that job!
You can also be a virtual walker! You even get the t-shirt and medal prior to the walk so you can wear it on July 18th!
