Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Railroad Hobby Show has been cancelled. This is a huge loss, because revenue from the show impacts railroad and model railroad hobbyist all over the United States.
Over 54 years, the Railroad Hobby Show has become one of the largest railroad and model railroad themed shows in North America. The show is organized and sponsored by the Amherst Railway Society.
Revenue from the show funds railroad preservation and restoration programs all over the United States. Since 1991, the Amherst Railway Society has donated nearly $850,000 to organizations working to safeguard our national railroad heritage.
Revenue from the show promotes model railroading. Through our two model railroad clubs, the Amherst Railway Society introduces model railroading to new audiences all over the Northeast. We teach model railroading skills, build community among model railroaders, and support the efforts of other model railroad organizations, manufacturers, and vendors.
Revenue from the show supports the Amherst Railway Society railroad library. Through purchases and donations, the Amherst library of railroad and model railroad books, magazines, and videos has become one of the largest in the Northeast. The library is a research source for railroad historians and authors, as well as an important source of entertainment for our members.
For 2021, we have lost the Railroad Hobby Show revenue.
From humble beginnings on the University of Massachusetts campus in the 1950s, the Amherst Railway Society has become one of the most influential and respected railroad and model railroad organizations in the United States. And, we intend to continue our railroad mission as long as we can.
