Each summer AME raises funds for a worthy cause, with “compassionate heart’ as this year’s theme. AME community will be raising funds for a wonderful family from Massachusetts. Pastor Andy with his wife and four children face a very challenging time as his eldest daughter, Ellie battles cancer.
Ellie is a quiet, sweet, and very creative nine year old who loves to paint, cook, play Barbies, and play with her friends and her sister, Emmie. If you met Ellie, you’d be greeted with a big smile. Her hearing is impaired due to a chemotherapy side effect, but that doesn’t stop her from singing and dancing.
In April 2017 Ellie was diagnosed with high risk neuroblastoma, a pediatric cancer that is really difficult to treat. For the next 14 months, she spent more than 200 days at Boston Children’s Hospital. Ellie endured five rounds of chemotherapy, surgery, two stem cell transplants, radiation, and five rounds of antibody therapy. She was all clear and labeled NED (no evidence of disease).
Neuroblastoma is a dangerous cancer that often returns. In June 2019, Ellie had a relapse and was given a new treatment, a combination of chemotherapy and antibody therapy that had just completed the trial phase. She had one of the best responses that doctors had ever seen. After eight cycles of week-long treatments with radiation interspersed, Ellie was declared NED. She then enrolled in the Memorial Sloan Kettering vaccine trial.
Scans conducted in May 2020 showed a relapse, so Ellie is starting a new Phase I trial treatment and continues to trust in God’s power to heal and give her peace in the challenging journey. Ellie is supported by her loving parents, Kate and Andy, who are co-founders and pastors of Fireside Church; sweet sister, Emmie; and adorable brothers, Blake and Drew.
The Bauers financial challenges will continue to accumulate over the months ahead, including medical bills, food, parking, gas, childcare, and unknown job accessibility. Whatever can be generously given will be extremely appreciated.
