My name is Jackie Creasey. I am from Milford, Delaware and moved to Boston, in August of 2017. Five months later, my younger brother, Alex, took his own life at just 19 years old. January 25, 2018 changed my family’s life, forever.
My younger brother was incredibly successful, and on the surface, he appeared to have it all. Alex graduated high school with the school record for Most Wins in wrestling, in 2017. He also earned straight A’s in his first semester of college, and was awarded an internship for which he had applied, just before his death. Alex was kind, sensitive, and caring. He just wasn’t any of those things towards himself.
Alex left with no warning. He did not suffer from any known depression, anxiety, or mental health disorder. Not, at least, a disorder that he was able to share with us. Alex was unable to voice his suffering, so he suffered in silence until he could not any longer.
I am running the Boston Marathon, for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, in April of 2019 to honor Alex.
I am running to be a voice for Alex and others like him. No one should have to live a life where they are afraid, for whatever reason, to speak up. Not knowing that Alex was in pain, led us to be completely blindsided by his decision. The devastation and sadness is indescribable. I want to raise awareness so that others, like Alex, know that it is okay to voice your pain. I want others to know that so many people want to help. Don’t hide. Don’t be ashamed. You are loved. And most importantly, you are not alone. That’s the message that I want others to hear.
Please support my cause by donating to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. AFSP is a wonderful organization that does many things. They raise awareness about mental health and suicide, fund research in order to decrease suicide, and provide opportunities and resources for families, like mine, who are affected by suicide. Every amount makes a difference. After seeing the outpouring of love that my family received, after losing Alex, I know we can reach my fundraising goal, together.
