In fall 2018, a 3rd grader named Julie struggled with peer relationships. Her teachers recommended that she join America SCORES Bay Area, a free team-based soccer, poetry and service learning program. During poetry sessions, Julie’s writing coach encouraged her to express herself through poetry. Julie discovered that she loved writing because it gave her a chance to explore her cultural identity, navigate difficult emotions and celebrate the big and small “wins.” While on the soccer pitch, Julie learned more than fancy footwork; she learned the importance of persistence, teamwork and sportsmanship. Julie also gained a new group of friends—a team of peers who have invested in her success, on and off the field.
Now, in the spring of 2019, Julie is a tactical soccer player, a confident student, and a team player. Julie found a fresh start at SCORES.
When you support America SCORES Bay Area, you change the game for 1,600 1st-8th graders just like Julie!
Your support gives our students the opportunity to develop academically, socially, emotionally and physically, as they:
· Leverage the beauty of poetry to express their deepest fears and greatest joys, all while building their literacy skills
· Increase physical activity, reducing the chances of obesity and building confidence
· Build leadership skills as they research a community challenge and take steps to solve it
· Enjoy (and keep!) children’s books that support their literacy development at home
Funds raised through this challenge will be used immediately to transform the lives of the 1,600 Bay Area Poet-Athletes we will serve this season, so please give today.
Your support is crucial, so please give today.
