No one is ever quite prepared to become a caregiver of a parent. Beginning the conversation around aging when your parents are healthy is a critical first step.
Recognizing the early signs of dementia in my mother was heartbreaking. She had been living independently for several decades, and that was becoming less and less possible. She had become less confident in her driving abilities. Finding her way to appointments and places she’d driven to for years had become a challenge. Staying on top of paperwork and bills had become too much trouble. She had lost initiative with housekeeping and home maintenance. Managing her calendar, appointments, and sense of time required increasing amounts of effort. Keeping track of medications and refills, as well as notes from doctor’s visits became a burden for her. The changes in her brain were getting in the way.
Partnering with my brother, I worked to identify her living preferences, declutter her house, and prioritize and pack up her belongings. I interviewed continuing care communities in Michigan and moved her just up the road from my home. My mother and I worked with an estate lawyer to clarify her wishes and a financial advisor to ensure she could afford her remaining years. She desired to remain “independent” in an assisted living community.
Assisted living alleviated most of the anxiety and stress that she was feeling. Maintaining her own home, meals, medication, and driving are no longer required of her. I now drive her to her appointments and see her more often than I had when she was out-of-state. She is able to spend time with her grandchildren and watch them grow. We talk daily, and I support her in all the ways I know how.
There’s still a long road ahead. Please join me in acknowledging how Alzheimer’s will impact us all by Giving40 to a GlobalGiving Leader Cure Alzheimer’s Fund.
