Worldwide, millions of people suffer from treatable conditions, simply due to a lack of access to healthcare facilities. Healthcare related infrastructure in Malawi is a topic of concern for most rural and peri-urban citizens, largely due to the cost of purchasing, storing, and maintaining proper ambulance vehicles. Due to the large gap in resource availability, many of the aforementioned communities are neglected when it comes to emergency transportation and triage support. As a result, many would-be patients die en route to local health centers. This stark reality inspired the Malawians in Texas Team (MITO) team to create the AmbuBike Project or Village Ambulance in 2018. For instance, in Malawi in the Nsanje district, the average distance from home to health facility is 9 km. Women and children are most affected, and the logistics involved in transporting people from home to clinic render economically challenged communities in a disadvantaged state, especially when local ambulances rarely venture into peri-urban, and rural areas. MITO seeks to make a difference in the issue of lack of access to care for people in the rural areas where there is no operating ambulance to transport patients to the nearest health facilities. MITO has partnered with Amaravi Metals Malawi and Friends of Malawi Organization to provide Ambubikes to the most vulnerable villages in Malawi. So far, we have manufactured and donated 9 Ambubikes to 9 districts in Malawi. Our goal is to impact all 28 districts of Malawi. MITO is seeking donations from the public that want to make a difference in support of our AmbuBike Project. We are grateful for the support we’ve received thus far from various donors but we now seek to expand our project to the Central and the Northern Region of Malawi. Thanks to skillful collaboration between the MITO team in the US, and Amaravi Metals on site in Malawi, we have been able to control each step of the production process of our own take on Bike Powered Ambulances, keeping our costs low. As it stands, we have donated all the districts in the Southern of Malawi. Despite the delay due to the Malawi election season and the threat of the COVID global pandemic, we are now on track to donate in the district of Nsanje and the Central Region of Malawi. Thanks to the generous donation we received from Friends of Malawi and individual donors in the community, without their generous donation, all this would have been impossible. With the current funds, we will be able to purchase additional bikes, customize them into AmbuBikes, deliver them to each site, and train local staff on their basic use and maintenance. Help us make a difference in the lives of the needy. The money donated will be used to make more Ambubikes and ease transportation to the rural disadvantaged population. Thank you for any contribution you can make to our goal Note: Funds excess of our goal will be used to train local staff on their basic use and maintenance of the Ambubike and 10% of the contributions over $2500 will go to other MITO projects or future projects and for costs associated with marketing and sharing the stories of our various initiatives within our mission.
