Amara is a not-for-profit that serves children in foster care and the families who care for them. For the last three years, I (Chelsea) have been volunteering in their Emergency Sanctuary. The Sanctuary provides a warm, loving, and safe environment for kids ages 0-12 who have just been removed from their homes. This in-between option buys some time for the adults to find the best possible long-term solution for them while they're in the care of trauma-informed staff and volunteers.
Over the last three years, I've been able to connect with 121 kiddos in all different ways. It's brought me so much joy to read stories, play games, make dinner, and rock them to sleep. Unfortunately, due to COVID and funding, the Sanctuary has had to close its doors until at least the end of 2021. I can't express how sad it's made me to lose this connection to my community and these kids.
If you're able to make a donation, I can assure you Amara will put it to good use. Whether they are recruiting and training new foster families, advocating for kids to maintain access to their birth families (when appropriate), or, hopefully someday, reopening the Sanctuary.
